Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the official, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
