Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
